Frequently Asked questions
Will I learn to defend myself?
Yes! At the end of a modest investment of six months to one year, you will test for your White Sash. You will learn to defend against chokes, strangles, knife attacks, attacks at gun point, what to do if you are pinned on the ground or are being pushed, grabbed, and so much more. You will have learned 108 self-defense moves and your muscle memory will be so deep that you’ll be able to do ALL of them in under 6 minutes – with precision! This is training that will last you a life time!
I'm out of shape. Can I do this?
YES! Everyone steps onto the mat at different places in their lives. Some people are more athletic and in shape while others are older or haven’t worked out in a really long time. There is a place for you here at Naga. The training is individual, which means we meet you right where you are. We help you modify the workout if we need to, so you can warm up and train alongside your teammates – all of whom will be cheering you on! Eventually, you’ll find yourself breathing easier, gaining flexibility, able to do more push ups and maybe even losing some weight. Don’t worry. The training path is long and no one expects you to be perfect. “Nothing you do is wrong”, is one of our tenets, and we mean it! Come to us just as you are and do your best. We promise to give you our best too. And together, we’ll do this!
I'm in great shape. Will the workout challenge me enough?
YES! This is a great workout and we will take you as far as you want to go with it! Get in the best shape of your life while learning skills that you can count on in a community that already adores you!
I'm over 40. Can I train? Is there an age limit?
You are limitless! This, we truly believe. You are never too old to start training. Everyone looks different on the mat, yet there is a place for each individual here at Naga regardless of age and ability. The symbol of our art is the rose. Each rose is beautiful and unique, just like each of our students. So join us on this journey and we will meet you right where you are. Our promise to you is that we will modify anything we do so that you can do it too, right alongside your teammates – a very supportive bunch of wonderful people! You are never too old to train. As we age, we all get smarter and more clever. You bring a lot to your training already, and we can’t wait to meet you and have you join us on the workout floor! Come as you are and we will help you along the way!
How many times a week should I attend classes?
We recommend a training schedule of two classes per week, but we know that life can get busy. Staying consistent and making room for training even in the craziest of weeks is, when we take the long view, the most important thing. We have open training times seven days a week so you can come into the school and work out on your own. Ask about our “open mat”.

Try out Poekoelan! You are never too old to train. There are always modifications to accommodate different learning styles and abilities. This is a martial arts school that meets people right where they are.
I started training at Naga for selfish reasons: to do something just for me.

Father and Son: Ken and Nate Westin

I watched my son training and appreciated the art. I wanted to channel my energy and strengthen my body and especially my back. I trained Tai Kwan Do as a kid and knew I wanted something more interesting, with a focus on self-defense. Plus, I heard Naga is really good with kids.
I was playing football in college and my coach said martial arts is good for hand-eye coordination and physical strength training. My experience with Poekoelan has been incredibly positive. I have trained a couple of other styles and never liked any of them as much. I can do more push ups than I ever could before and my cardio is hugely improved!
